Here are some recently commissioned (and uncommissioned) pieces, and a couple of fall-themed illustrations from the archive.
As always, I look forward to receiving challenging new assignments and collaborating both with long-time and new clients!
Great Blues Riffs
Sometimes an idea finds me when I'm least expecting it. I scribbled the germ of this idea in my sketchbook a while back while listening to some old vinyl (by the late Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher, to be exact). He was a master of acoustic and electric blues whose music hooked me years ago, and this idea for "a great blues hook" appeared out of nowhere (where most ideas form, it seems). I took it from sketch to finish when I found some free time recently.
Red and Blue Views of Education
Based on an unchosen sketch for Harvard's Education Next magazine, for an upcoming article about the ways in which Democrats and Republicans view a topics related to K-12 education in America. The article analyzed respondents' comments in a large number of polls and surveys. [The creative team settled on another sketch/solution, which I will post in an upcoming newsletter.]
Killing Curiosity
For an article on the ways in which the education system can kill young students' curiosity. For Education Week magazine. (Modified version of the published art.)
Halloween Brain
From the archives. How kids' brains work on Halloween. Candy, candy, candy, and if there's brain space left over... maybe homework.
Endless Task
A piece done for the Los Angeles Times, recently revised, showing a suburban homeowner's never-ending task of raking leaves. I once had a yard with a bunch of oak trees, and the task really did seem endless at times. I've since moved and now have a bunch of pine trees, and currently find myself forever dealing with pine cones. Honestly, I preferred the leaves. (Being a dad, I think I'm allowed to say I'm pining for the cones to leave.)
